Why Water Heater Maintenance Is Worth Every Penny

Why Water Heater Maintenance Is Worth Every Penny image

Most people don't think about their water heater until it stops working. And by that point, you're looking at either a costly emergency repair or a full replacement - neither of which is fun to deal with.

That old, heavily corroded rod next to the shiny new one tells the whole story. The deteriorated one is an anode rod - a sacrificial metal rod inside your water heater that attracts corrosive minerals so the tank itself doesn't rust out. When it gets eaten down like that, it stops protecting the tank. From that point on, the corrosion goes straight to the lining, and the clock starts ticking on your entire unit.

Swapping out a worn anode rod is one of the simplest, most cost-effective things you can do to add years of life to your water heater. It's the kind of maintenance that almost never makes the to-do list - but it absolutely should. Catching it early is always cheaper than the alternative.

We check things like this during routine water heater service calls. A lot of homeowners are surprised by what we find when a system hasn't been looked at in a few years. The good news is that most of the time, staying ahead of it is straightforward and affordable.
